With little in way of economic news, investors took a step back from the recent weeks' rally and examined a myriad of earnings results -- not all of which were positive.

It was one year ago that the Dow industrials and broader S&P 500 finished the day at their lowest level in 12 years. The Dow has rallied about 62% since then. While stocks finished mixed on Monday with very low volumes, the Nasdaq has closed at an 18-months high.
Continue reading Before the Bell: Futures Lower on the Anniversary of Markets Low

Before the Bell: Futures Lower on the Anniversary of Markets Low originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 08:30:00 EST. Consumers are more pessimistic this month than last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average loses 100 points on the news. Unemployment is better in one month, worse in another. The DJIA goes up on the good news, down on the bad. Home Depot has a good quarter, raises its dividend, and forecasts a better year for 2010. The stock goes up 50 cents on a day when the market is down 100 points. Other stocks are light on revenues. They go down 10% or more.

The market always sends mixed messages. There has never been a time when all the news is good. That's impossible. If all the news is all good, it means the economy is really thriving. Then investors worry about things being too strong, afraid that inflation will come back, so they sell stocks. When things seem totally awful (see 2008 and 2009 as examples), some investors see nothing but upside potential (see Warren Buffett and General Electric (GE) purchases), and they buy stocks. Most of the time, however, the news is good and bad. There is never a straight upward or downward line for the DJIA or for any stock for a long period of time unless the stock goes out of business, then the line is flat.

Continue reading Comfort Zone Investing: Keeping Cool with the Market's Mixed Messages

Comfort Zone Investing: Keeping Cool with the Market's Mixed Messages originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 27 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. But they don't. While numbers are very important and provide the majority of an investment decision, other elements come into play that are critical to any stock's success. They're hard to find sometimes but always worth the effort.

If you can discover these elements in a stock and great numbers, too, you've got all the odds for investing success in your favor.

The number one, most important piece of the investing puzzle is management. Management is everything. It's where all ideas begin and execution of them is implemented. Management can turn around a bad company and make it great. Management can take a good idea and turn it into a successful business.

Continue reading Comfort Zone Investing: Successful Stocks -- More Than Numbers

Comfort Zone Investing: Successful Stocks -- More Than Numbers originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 20 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. We were down as much as 160 points and a buying spree came in rapidly. The 9.7% unemployment left more questions when you consider that the jobs creation lost another 20,000 jobs. Today's late-day rally seemed like bargain hunting at the end of the day or short sellers closing out of positions ahead of the weekend after big selling all week. The huge loss that it looked like was suddenly a day where the positive or negative close was not going to known until the final minutes.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,012.23 +10.05 (0.10%)
S&P 500 1,066.18 +3.07 (0.29%)
Nasdaq 2,141.12 +15.69 (0.74%)
(CSCO), an expert in networking, posted Q2 results on Wednesday after the bell. Judging by the data, the tech company is holding up okay.

The top line saw an increase of 8%. Net income came in at 40 cents per share, a 25% jump compared to the year-ago number. According to our earnings preview, 35 cents per share was the figure to beat. Score one for management.

Despite Cisco Systems' upbeat report concerns about the economic recovery ahead of the jobs report continued to affect investors' sentiment.

Already on Wednesday, several weak economic readings, including a service sector gauge, and disappointing results from Pfizer (PFE) pushed stocks lower. But Wall Street is bracing for the nonfarm payroll report due out Friday morning to get a better feel for the state of the economic recovery and employment.
Continue reading Before the Bell: Stocks to Struggle at the Open

Before the Bell: Stocks to Struggle at the Open originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 08:25:00 EST. A live webcast of the call will be available at the company's website.

During the three months that ended in January, Cisco completed an acquisition, demonstrated new technologies at CES and announced some organizational changes. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for earnings for that period of 35 cents per share. That compares with 36 cents per share in the previous quarter and 32 cents per share a year ago. Revenue for the second quarter is expected to be 3.5% higher than a year ago to $9.4 billion.

Continue reading Cisco Earnings Preview: Modest Growth Expected for Q2

Cisco Earnings Preview: Modest Growth Expected for Q2 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 10:00:00 EST. This could be a good sign for the company, which is scheduled to report Q2 earnings on Wednesday evening. Analysts are looking for the company to post a profit of 35 cents per share on revenue of $9.4 billion, compared to a profit of 32 cents per share on revenue of $9.09 billion in the year-ago period. A good quarter announced last night by competitor Juniper Networks (JNPR) also bodes well for Cisco next week. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on CSCO.
Continue reading Cisco CEO Upbeat About Economic Recovery

Cisco CEO Upbeat About Economic Recovery originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:20:00 EST. He made a fortune as he helped more than 100 tech companies go public, which included marquee names like Cisco (CSCO), Netscape and Amazon.com (AMZN).

But those days seem quaint. Revenues didn't impress me, as sales saw a decline of 8%. Net income, however, was better. On an adjusted basis, earnings per share increased 11% to $1.14.

Also doing well was the operating margin. The adjusted metric increased 170 basis points during the quarter. The annual statement of cash flows should look good to any long-term shareholder. Management still had cash left over from operations after share repurchases, dividend obligations, and capital spending.

Continue reading Hewlett-Packard reports growth in profit and operating margin in Q4

Hewlett-Packard reports growth in profit and operating margin in Q4 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST.
Azure will deliver an online platform for the software development set to build their own mousetraps and provide plenty of storage space for users. Testing began a year ago, and full live version will be celebrated next year. For the first month, Azure will be free. The Street.com's Jim Cramer says that OPEC may take oil out of the equity-market equation and make stock-picking matter again.

If OPEC says it likes an oil price in the $75-78 range, as it said today, we could be looking at a nirvana moment for stocks. We know that any time oil bounces, the S&P 500 futures go up. Any time it goes down, the S&P futures go down. But if OPEC wants to keep it right here, we take oil out of the equation and make stock-picking matter again.

Right now, the Saudis are telling the big oil-shipping companies that they want to bring 1 million barrels a day into the market straight away to keep oil below $80. That can be used to overwhelm the speculators who are tying up as much as 20% of the oil fleet in the world to keep oil off the market and buoy its price. But they will not bring the oil to the market below $75.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Oil and the equity nirvana

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Oil and the equity nirvana originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 09:20:00 EST. So, he co-founded 3Com (COMS) back in 1979. It would become a pioneering company.

But now 3Com will no longer be independent. That is, the company is selling out to Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) for $2.7 billion in cash or $7.90 per share.

The deal is definitely a bold move. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says that as numerous stories are mulled over anew, the reasons for selling seem silly.

The lack of important data today forces market participants to revisit stories that got tossed out over the last few weeks simply because of earnings ennui. People are now doubling back to see what they have forgotten, or more important, why they sold certain stocks they most likely shouldn't have.

For example, why did JPMorgan (JPM) (Cramer's Take) go from $47 to $44? Bad loans? Credit quality? No, not really. Nothing like that. Why did Goldman Sachs (GS) (Cramer's Take) go from $192 to the $170s? Some of it was Meredith Whitney, but there is also a sense of entitlement that makes the firm hated, as if somehow it is too much of a pariah to invest in.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Investors are rethinking their snap judgments

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Investors are rethinking their snap judgments originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST.
